Flier Friday!!!

Making fliers for shows is a total lost art.

Can we blame the internet? Maybe.

Can we blame laziness? Sure, why not.

A few years back i came across the book “Fucked Up + Photocopied- The Instant Art of the Punk Rock Movement” (find it on amazon)

The images were bold and powerful, unique and historic. Seeing the fliers for shows you could only dream about in one book was something I could totally get into.

FU+PC

Flier making was a huge part of my youth. Long before Photoshop, Illustrator or even Mac Paint there was paper, scissors, glue and a photo copy machine. Having a friend or a hook up at a print shop was golden!!

Late night kinko’s hang out sessions were key when there was a show to promote. Most times the flier was way cooler than the show itself.

We’d spend all night making them and then spend the rest of the night wheat pasting them around town in high traffic areas, very visible yet hard to reach places. (I recall an Earth Crisis, Snapcase filer for a show in Northampton MA. that was pasted to a sign for at least 8 or 9 years. The sign was removed all together the flier lasted.)

Being the packrat that I am. I tried to save fliers to every show I went to, put on or played. When I sold my condo and was packing it up to move into my new house I threw away boxes and boxes of “memories”.

I had moved that shit so many times 6 apartments in 7 1/2 years. I didn’t want to lug the shit around anymore. So to the curbside it went. It’s only now that I wish I had a little more foresight in the fact that I may have actually cared about what was in the boxes.

I found a folder of fliers that I manages to save. Some are more recent but nonetheless they are fucking cool….

This was April 1998 (thank’s Tre)

Every year I was involved with a local music festival in Northampton, MA called “The Really Loud Music Fest”.  However this year we were not allowed to do shows at the previous club anymore due to new owners. This was moved to Springfield, MA last minute to a dance club.

Converge was to headline the show but the drummer failed to show up. The night was capped off with Jake and Jay from Agoraphobic Nosebleed/ Isis doing an improvised noise/art set…

My good friend Grail has some unbelievable photos from this day… if I could ever get my hands on those it would be a good day.

Oct 1999. BTSJ was an annual show that I was a part of with Ian from Reach The Sky. I think we did 7 total.

If any of you have ever been to the Palladium in Worcester, MA you need to understand that we did this show on the upstairs stage (legal capacity of 500) and not in the main theatre. With that being said we had around 1200 people crammed into that little room for what was one of the best shows I have ever been a part of.

At one point during Bane’s set i remember thinking to myself “I hope no one dies”. It was that fucking insane. There was a video floating around of that set on the internet that still gives me chills to watch. I am too lazy to look for it and link it right now.

This was April 2002 I think, I could be wrong. It was the video shoot for the Hatebreed song ” I Will be Heard”

My band opened the show in what was our 3rd show ever maybe? I still look at this flier and cannot get over the lineup of this show.

Feb 1994… Converge was to break up because Jeff, their then bass player, was moving to Canada for school.

This was the who’s who of the local scene at the time. The drummer from “Bound” went on to be in the Drop Kick Murphy’s years later. 16 years later Converge is still putting out some of the most important records in heavy music.

What up Scott Daltonic!! Ryan Third Age!!! this shit was 16 years ago holy fuck…

this had to of been 1992 or 1993 the latest.

Greenfield, MA is in the middle of fucking nowhere off of 1-91 20 minutes south of the Vermont boarder. In my high school years we’d go up to the grange hall to see some great fucking bands play. I remember seeing Green Day, Bikini Kill, Shelter, Supertouch, Nation of Ulysses and Wrecking Crew at this place amongst others.

I remember it was run by a priest or something. The hall was shut down after he got punched in the face by some punk rockers at some punk show around late 1993 if memory serves me so.

Never made it to this show because my friends car broke down somewhere around New Haven, CT. We ended up eating at the vegetarian Middle Eastern spot instead of moshing to World Peace.

thats all for nowI I guess. i’ll have to see what else i can dig up for the upcoming weeks.
